The Uhmm Box is made of polypropylene – a sustainable plastic material, which is both food grade and recycled 5 approved. In other words, the plastic material from the Uhmm Box can be recycled.
The Uhmm Box is coated, so the smell and colour of the food does not transfer to the material. In time, the coating will wear off, and so the lifespan of a Uhmm Box is approximately 2 years.

The way the Uhmm Box aesthetically wraps itself around the food, and its ability to transform from box to bowl to plate, makes eating from the Uhmm Box a sensory experience.
First, place the food or object into the Uhmm Box, then fold the box around it.
The unique folding technique makes the box practical for the dishwasher, fridge, or any other place where space is limited. Unfold the box to form a plate, and benefit from a product that is easy to clean and store.
When the Uhmm Box is closed it is not 100% waterproof – this helps the food stay fresh and “breathe”. The small openings by the lid minimize condensation, and are still so small that more watery foods do not run out. The openings also work as steam holes, and both the lid and the strap can therefore stay on when the box when used in the microwave.
The Uhmm Box is suitable for the freezer too, so there is no excuse for not reducing your use of tin foil, plastic bags and other disposable packaging.
THE PRACTICAL ART OF FOLDING
The Uhmm Box’s unique folding technique makes it functional and ensures that the food can “breathe” and stay fresh. Before using the Uhmm Box for the first time, it is a good idea to fold the box into position, and the next time you use it, it will “remember” what you did.
PERSONALIZE YOUR UHMM BOX
Personalize your Uhmm box with a decorative drawing. The mat and solid colored surface on the Uhmm box is suitable to draw on with different kinds of pens. Drawings from water-based pens will vanish in the dish washer for a temporary fun decoration, but for a permanent decoration on Uhmm box we recommend porcelain pens.
When you have decorated your box with porcelain pens you place the box in the oven at 100 degrees (no more) in 25 min. After 25 min you shut off the oven and leave the box in the oven to cool down until the oven is cold. Your decoration will now be permanent and you can put the box in the dish washer.
FAQ’S
HOW MANY TIMES CAN YOU FOLD THE PRODUCT?
We have fold tested the box 1000 times, and additionally, there is a two-year warranty. The fold lines are designed to bend in a specific direction, so it is important to follow the instructions in the folding guide.
IS IT DIFFICULT TO FOLD/CLOSE?
The box is easy to fold, and the fold lines become more pliable with use. It is easiest to fold one side at a time. Make sure the corners fold inwards in the box. Press the sides in a little, and tip the lid over, so they catch the sides – start by tipping the lid over the back corners. Once the box is folded, attach the strap to the button on the box and wrap it around the box (going beneath the bottom and up) and close it on the front of the box. Remember the long flap should be facing out, so the “Uhmm” logo is placed on the lid of the box. See the folding guide under “product info”.
IS THE BOX COMPLETELY SEALED?
It is closed but at the same time there are small holes where the lid joins the box, which means it is not 100% waterproof, and very runny liquids may leak out. However, the holes are so small that more viscous fluids like gravy, ketchup etc. will not leak out. If in doubt, we recommend that you place a small bag around the box’ exterior, as even tightly closed containers risk opening up.
IS THE BOX SOFT OR HARD?
It is both – the fold lines are soft and flexible, but the bottom, top and sides are hard, like an ordinary box.
DO I RISK THAT MY FOOD WILL RUN OUT WHEN I OPEN THE BOX?
No, the box keeps its shape when you open the lid. It is only once you press the sides that it folds out like a plate.
DOES IT STAIN FROM THE COLOR OF THE FOOD?
The box has a matte surface which makes it resistant to discolouring from food. Tomato sauce, carrots etc. clean off easily. If discolouring occurs from the likes of curry etc., we recommend you wash it twice. As the material is used/worn it will lose a little of its resistance.
DOES IT RETAIN SMELL FROM FOOD?
No, our plastic material has a specific quality that means it does not retain any smell from food.
WILL THE FRIDGE SMELL WHEN I STORE FOOD IN IT?
No, the box’s unique design allows the food to breathe, but the smell stays inside the box – even foods that have a very strong odour.
SHOULD I LOOSEN THE LID WHEN PLACING IT IN THE MICROWAVE?
No, there is no need for this, as the box has built-in steam holes. You do not need to remove the strap either.
HOW DURABLE IS THE STRAP?
The strap is made from silicone, which is a very durable material, that retains both its colour and elasticity. The strap is just as robust as the box, so you can easily put it in the freezer, dishwasher and microwave. The strap is very well attached to the button on the box, and therefore unlikely to get lost.
IS IT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN?
Yes, but it requires a certain age/size of hand to close it. We recommend it for ages 7 years and up. Box model no. 02 is the easiest to close.
