How-to Use the Futomaki Sushi Mold
Futomaki is a type of Japanese sushi that is rolled into a long thick cylinder. A literal translation of futomaki is "fat rolled sushi." It is rice and fillings wrapped in dried, roasted seaweed (nori), and then sliced into smaller bite-sized pieces. Exactly like we find in sushi restaurants. Typically rolled by hand, using a mold helps make a perfect maki sushi roll!
What’s inside a Futomaki roll? Well, really we can choose different fillings for futomaki. You can use 5 ingredients or more. It really depends on you - and that is what makes Futomaki such fun sushi to share! The most common ingredients include cucumber, shiitake mushrooms, tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelette), spinach, etc. In this video, we put cucumbers, colourful fish cake, crab, seasoned bamboo shoots & shiitake mushrooms - even some smoked salmon.
Just keep in mind the flavours should balance each other and when the futomaki is sliced, the fillings should appear colorful and beautiful.
Have fun!
