Whether it be for you or someone else, with so many choices, choosing a lunch bag is definitely not an easy task. To help you make the best decision, here are five things to consider:
Should the lunch bag be insulated?
If you often carry foods that must be kept cold, then having an insulated bag is a must. Especially if you enjoy meat-based lunches or carry any dairy products, it will keep the food edible and thus avoiding food poisoning. Note, however, that you are required to carry an ice pack so the bag, and its contents, stays cool.
On the other hand, if you carry foods that do not need to be refrigerated such as snack bars or certain fruits, an insulated bag is not necessary.
Does the size of a lunch bag matter?
The size of the chosen bag depends on what you usually carry for lunch. Obivously, having an 100% leak-proof lunch box is a must so that you can store it sideways or upright.
When choosing the appropriate size lunch bag, simply think about what you usually carry for lunch. If you simply carry a fruit, like an apple, instead of a lunch bag, we recommend wrapping it in a furoshiki wrapping cloth instead.
On the other hand, if you enjoy a more complete lunch, then obviously a medium to large-size bag is required. Usually, lunches will include a drink, a meal, a little dessert and some snacks to chew on throughout the day. For those big eaters, you should find something in our collection of lunch boxes or lunch bags. Worst case scenario, if you're more of an "hands-on" person, you can bring a few containers with you, and try them out in a lunch box or bag in a store.
Should I get a messenger style lunch bag or one with a small handle?
Messenger style bags are great because they usually come with a large strap so the weight is evenly spread and the bag doesn’t end up hurting your shoulders at the end of the day.
If you only need a small bag, make sure to find one that will fit in your backpack or purse. Having a handle is also a great perk so you can carry it in case you need space to carry your laptop or other big items.
Either way, a lunch bag that can be carried several ways will always do the trick. Find one with a handle and a removable strap, and you will be ready for any kind of situations!
What about machine washable lunch bags?
Sure a machine washable lunch bag has its benefits, unfortunately most washing washable bags aren't insulated. Trying to wash them in a washing machine might result in damage to the insulating fabric.
If you have leak-proof containers, or always carry your lunch boxes upright, this will not be an issue. Also, having a bag with a wipeable interior is great idea.
What about lunch bag accessories?
For an insulated, an interior pocket will be a great perk in order to store the ice pack, utensils or even snacks.
Having a sweat-proof ice pack will avoid humidity inside the bag and keep it damage and dirt free.
As mentioned earlier, having a removable strap/handle can also be beneficial.
